Wuling

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Wuling is a southern commandery whose submission strengthens Xuande’s position in Jingzhou. Its capture, achieved not by Zhang Fei’s attack as planned but through an internal reversal, reflects the campaign’s combination of military pressure and local political allegiance.

Strategic importance

After Xuande’s forces gain ground in Jingzhou, Ma Liang recommends securing the region by raising Liu Qi’s standing and then taking the southern commanderies. He proposes a sequence beginning with Lingling and Wuling, followed by Guiyang and Changsha, to give Xuande a more secure base with money and food. Wuling is therefore part of a larger effort to turn recent gains into durable territorial control.

The campaign and the governor’s defeat

Kong Ming requires Zhang Fei to sign a military-law pledge making him accountable if he fails. Zhang Fei accepts and sets out for Wuling with three thousand soldiers. The governor convenes his officers to discuss resistance, but Gong Zhi argues that an attack is futile and urges submission. The governor favors executing him, but the other officers prevent this; the governor then insists on leading the defense himself.

The governor’s attack fails. On returning to the city, he finds that Gong Zhi has taken control. Gong Zhi declares that the people have chosen to join Xuande, and the governor’s retreating force is turned back. His own men kill him and bring his head to Zhang Fei in hope of securing their pardon. Gong Zhi then surrenders Wuling.

Change of rule and significance

Xuande appoints Gong Zhi governor in recognition of his role in the transfer of power. He also reassures Wuling’s population that the people of the captured city will not be harmed. The outcome thus combines a violent end to the governor’s resistance with a comparatively orderly change in the city’s allegiance and administration.

Wuling’s capture advances Xuande’s southern campaign while illustrating that possession of a city depends on more than the force brought against its walls. The governor’s authority collapses when an officer rejects his policy and claims the people’s support for Xuande; the new administration then presents security for the population as part of its claim to rule.
